Sneade’s Ace Home Center Helps Calvert County Residents Keep Their Home Safe

While home safety is a year-round concern, it’s especially critical during the holidays. Focusing on home protection, both inside and out is an important part of preparing for a happy and healthy “Home safety should be top-of-mind for all homeowners,” said Randy Holmes, Retail Operations Manager of Sneade’s Ace Home Center, Inc., Owings, Maryland.  We take great pride in helping our customers make their homes as safe as possible for their families.

A proper security system is the first step toward maintaining a safe home during the holidays since many people are traveling this time of year. Indoor and outdoor lighting can be set up with timers that turn lights on and off to create the appearance of an occupied home. Additionally, the following tips will help protect the people inside your home during the holidays:

Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, fires will injure approximately 2,600 people during the holiday season, and cause close to $930 million in damage. These two inexpensive devices save lives, especially with the risks associated with festive lights and candles lit for long periods of time.

Every floor of your home should be equipped with one smoke detector and one carbon monoxide detector, or a combo unit, says Holmes.  This is especially important near bedrooms, and well within earshot. The rule of thumb is to change the batteries when you change your clocks, twice per year. The average cost is between $25-$50 a small price to pay for peace of mind.

Safeguard your fireplace

Your fireplace is the perfect centerpiece where you can entertain guests and keep warm. Without proper maintenance and cleaning, however, fireplaces turn into safety hazards. Call a professional to inspect and clean your chimney once a year. You can also keep birds and other small animals out of the chimney by installing a chimney cap.

Additional safety fixes

Ensure your area rugs have anti-skid tape or padding to keep them sure-footed, and always have a strong step stool on hand to reach items or seasonal decorations that are too high to reach in closets, cabinets or storage units.

One quick safety fix for wobbly chairs and tables is simply a couple of wood screws and some carpenter’s glue, advises Holmes.  Your guests should be able to practice safe seating.

By following these easy safety tips this holiday season, you can rest assured you will have a safe and pleasant holiday. For more information on home safety, take a trip to your local Ace Hardware store or visit www.sneades.com.
