The Essential Dorm Room Toolkit Guide

As you send your kiddos off to college, surely you have picked up many necessary items such as bedding, towels, laptop, toiletries, etc. But have you given any thought to an essential dorm room toolkit? These are objects that most college kids never think to bring but will make life a million times easier. Here is our list of the things to add to your essential dorm room toolkit.

Toolbox

Yes, we are completely serious. What good is it to have the tools, if they get scattered all over the room?  Keep everything stored in one convenient location. It can be locked to ensure nothing “walks off.” It is a great place to store all sorts of hardware such as push pins, poster putty, tape, nails, bike tools, etc. Plus the toolbox stores easily under a bed or chair, another advantage when space is at a premium.

Flashlight

Flashlights are about the most underrated tool. You never realize how handy they are until you have one. Perfect for traveling during late night classes. Use them to search dark dorm room corners and under beds. Lost something out in the parking lot? Grab your flashlight and head out searching! If your college student has a car, we suggest one for the car and one for the dorm room.

Duct Tape

Nothing could be more helpful than duct tape. This stuff has about a million functions and is now available in plenty of fun colors. Students use it for everything from decorating to furniture repair to crafting.

Oven Mitt

This may seem like a weird one since most kids don’t have kitchens in their dorm rooms. But, consider that food made in the little microwave can get super hot. An oven mitt can save many fingers from many potential burns!

Febreeze

Let’s be honest; most college kids get pretty lazy when mom isn’t there reminding them to clean their rooms and do their laundry. Febreeze can be a life-saver after a weekend filled with shenanigans to freshen up the wardrobe or a dorm room. And, we’ll just leave it at that.

Mini-Vacuum

What college student wants to be vacuuming while away at school, right? You might be surprised how handy this tool will be. Between late-night snacking, school projects, etc. a dorm room rug can get pretty icky. Also, it is a life-saver if your student suffers from allergies.

First Aid Kit

Many places sell pre-set first aid kits all packed up with necessary items. Make sure they have things like band-aids, Neosporin, ibuprofen, antacids, Benadryl cream, cold medicine, sunscreen, etc. The first aid kit is a perfect tool to stay healthy all semester long.

White Board for Your Door (with a marker)

Believe it or not, you may go for days without “seeing” your roommate because of hectic schedules. These message boards are perfect for communicating and sending uplifting notes.

Book Light

While most students have a desk lamp, a book light could be just as useful. Roommates may live on separate schedules, and this could be a thoughtful way to get in some late night reading so as not to disturb anyone.

Sewing Kit

This tiny little pack is super beneficial. Whether for sewing on popped buttons, repairing ripped clothes, or fixing jewelry. Sewing is a fundamental skill that will come in handy for the rest of your life!

Multipurpose Tool

Look for a gadget that has many devices all on one: screwdriver, clippers, bottle opener, pliers, etc. This one tool surely will get used over and over again!
